Some meanings:
Sample: 1 a small part or quantity intended to show what the whole is like 2. Statistics a portion of a population, serving as a basis for estimates of the attributes of the whole population 3. a specimen taken for scientific testing or analysis.
Pool: 1. a small area of still water, typically one formed naturally 2. a group of people available for work when required or considered as a resource 3. a common fund into which all contributors pay and from which financial backing is provided
